“Hello my name is Frank Walker,” reads the 6-letter statement accompanying a photo of a DJ atop Ultra Music Festival’s main stage, with his arms raised in the air and pyro swirling in the wind. Even if you’d been following Frank’s Instagram feed, you still wouldn’t have known he’d been locked in between deep house hero Tommie Sunshine and summery dance music star Sam Feldt at Saturday’s show. So, who is Frank Walker, and how did he end up performing to thousands at the biggest congregation of the global nightlife community?
Earlier this month, several electronic music blogs were buzzing about Frank’s quizzical inclusion on the Ultra roster, pondering who this Canadian performer was and why he was positioned on this stage. YourEDM pointed out that the dj/producer’s general manager is Myles Shear, the mastermind behind Kygo’s sudden social media stunt that brought greater attention to the rapidly rising producer’s incoming releases. That’s just what Frank seems to have done too, rolling out his 24 EP ahead of Miami’s festivities and rendering all his Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts rebooted. His brand new 4-piece package of vocal heavy tracks are perfect for warm pool parties and sunny festival crowds. 24 teeters on the ever shrinking line between future house and future bass.
Well worth mentioning – Frank Walker has some direct relation to some of Canada’s most well-regarded business elite. He is the son of Belinda Stronach and her first husband, Magna International CEO Donald Walker. The Aurora-raised house music personality has been a formidable DJ in Toronto’s nightlife community too, entertaining crowds at venues like Maison Mercer, and taking the stage Veld Music Festival just last year.
Toronto-area nightlife enthusiasts may be familiar with Frank Walker, but it’s certain that many more home country listers and international audiences are about to witness a fierce ascent to the top of charts by this unexpected dance music force. Listen to the 24 EP below.
