“We’re live on the radio, so don’t swear okay!” Kiss 92.5 radio hosts Roz & Mocha dialed up deadmau5 this week in the early morning to issue a challenge that could seriously lead to you tearing both ears from your head. While reminiscing about “Boom Boom Boom Boom” by the Venga Boys, the radio hosts got nostalgic for old-school summer dance hits, wondering if they could conjure a current electronic music star to resurrect the genre for one time only.
It’s called bubblegum dance, a blend of Eurodance and pop that was widely popular in the mid-to-late 90s thanks to Venga Boys, Aqua, Eiffel 65, ATC, and others. Basic drum machine sounds and overly-simplistic synth melodies made these tracks a commodity to the backdrop of Saturday morning cartoon commercials. Now, these songs serve nothing more than a cringe-inducing throwback ballad at house parties or the occasional Team Fortress 2 fan film.
“I’m always looking for new and creative ways to burn my career,” says a groggy deadmau5, who begrudgingly takes the announcers up on their challenge. Sure, this is one of the most egregious things a Grammy-nominated electronic music producer could undertake, but the radio hosts do have a point. If anyone could pull off making a terrible Euro tune straight out of 1998 and not bat an eye, it’s Joel. Jump to the 5-minute mark to hear them call up Joel.
