After what seemed like a tipping point of tension amid electronic music devotees and DJ Mag’s yearly public poll, the longstanding nightlife platform is making amends with North Americans. In the vein of the global publishing brand’s “Best of British” awards, DJ Mag’s “Best of North America” voting is open. A much more refined alternative to the often criticized Top 100 rankings, the topmost 5 clubs, producers, labels, and performers in a variety of categories can now be voted on by the public ahead of the results announcement on July 4th and a series of events featuring the winning participants.
The most notable portion for Canadian voters has to be the “Best Venue – North” offering – DJ Mag has lumped all of Canada’s entrants into one category. The nominated venues in the great white north are; Coda (Toronto), Beach Club (Montreal), Open Studios (Vancouver), Stereo (Montreal), and Nest (Toronto). Curiously, Toronto’s REBEL nightclub is missing, an albeit flashy mega-venue that has embraced the city’s underground house and techno culture with a secondary internal club, Noir. Some Canadian music brands like Monstercat and My Favorite Robot are getting major representation in the inaugural poll as well.
